Vietnam Infrastructure Projects 2026: Rail, Airports, Ports and Supply Chain Opportunities

An overview of Vietnam’s major rail, metro, airport, port and energy projects, their actual stages, and the engineering supply chain areas to watch.

Vietnam is accelerating infrastructure development across high-speed rail, urban transit, airports, ports, coastal transport links and energy systems.

Several multibillion-dollar projects have recently reached important milestones. However, terms such as “approved,” “launched,” “groundbreaking” and “under construction” can describe very different stages—from feasibility studies and geological investigation to land acquisition, early works, main construction or trial operation.

For international owners, contractors, consultants, equipment manufacturers and material suppliers, understanding the actual project stage is just as important as knowing the headline investment value.

Based on public information available as of 4 August 2026, this article reviews major infrastructure projects progressing across Vietnam and identifies the civil engineering supply chain capabilities relevant to their development.

Important: The engineering sectors identified in this article are based on publicly announced project scopes. They indicate areas worth monitoring but do not mean that procurement packages have already been released. Tendering and supplier participation should always be verified through official project and procurement information.

Why Project Stage Matters

Infrastructure demand changes significantly as a project moves from planning to operation. Different stages usually involve different engineering priorities:

  • Investment approval and feasibility: Planning, feasibility studies, technical consulting, surveys and preliminary design.
  • Geological investigation and land acquisition: Site investigation, monitoring, mapping, utility surveys and enabling works.
  • Detailed design and tender preparation: Engineering design, technical specifications, cost planning and procurement support.
  • Early works: Site preparation, access roads, utility relocation, ground treatment and temporary works.
  • Main construction: Civil works, structures, construction equipment, engineering materials, monitoring and project management.
  • Installation and trial operation: MEP systems, testing, commissioning, digital systems, inspection and maintenance preparation.

Understanding these differences helps companies assess when their technologies, services or products may become relevant to a project.

1. Railways and Urban Transit

North–South High-Speed Railway

Vietnam’s North–South High-Speed Railway remains the country’s largest long-term transport project.

The planned railway will connect Ngoc Hoi in Hanoi with Thu Thiem in Ho Chi Minh City. It will be approximately 1,541 kilometres long, using standard-gauge, double-track and electrified railway technology, with a design speed of 350 km/h.

The preliminary investment is approximately US$67.34 billion.

The investment policy has been approved, while feasibility studies, front-end engineering design consulting and land acquisition preparation are being advanced. Vietnam’s public schedule envisages feasibility approval and the commencement of construction activities between late 2026 and 2028, with substantial completion targeted for 2035.

Given its scale, the project is relevant to railway planning, bridges and tunnels, track systems, electrification, signalling, rolling stock, stations, digital systems, testing and long-term maintenance.

Lao Cai–Hanoi–Hai Phong Railway

The Lao Cai–Hanoi–Hai Phong Railway will connect the China–Vietnam border area with Hanoi and Lach Huyen Port in Hai Phong.

The project includes approximately 390.9 kilometres of main line and 27.9 kilometres of branch lines, with an estimated investment of US$8.37 billion. Phase 1 is planned as an electrified, standard-gauge railway serving both passenger and freight transport.

Connection infrastructure and station-front works related to five stations began in December 2025. However, the main railway remains in feasibility, design, land acquisition and investment-adjustment stages.

The start of station-related works should therefore not be interpreted as full construction of the entire railway.

Hanoi–Quang Ninh High-Speed Railway

Construction of the Hanoi–Quang Ninh High-Speed Railway officially began on 12 April 2026.

The approximately 120.2-kilometre line will connect Hanoi, Bac Ninh, Hai Phong and Quang Ninh. It has a planned maximum speed of 350 km/h and an investment exceeding VND147 trillion, equivalent to more than US$5.6 billion.

The publicly announced target is to begin commercial operations in 2028.

The project may involve demand across railway civil works, bridges, stations, track systems, power supply, signalling, monitoring and construction equipment.

Ho Chi Minh City Metro Line 2

Construction of the Ben Thanh–Tham Luong section of Ho Chi Minh City Metro Line 2 began on 15 January 2026.

The project is more than 11 kilometres long and includes ten underground stations, one elevated station and a depot. Total investment exceeds VND55 trillion, approximately US$2.1 billion, with completion targeted for the fourth quarter of 2030.

Its construction scope is relevant to underground stations, rail tunnels, deep excavations, utility relocation, structural monitoring, track systems, MEP works and urban traffic coordination.

Binh Duong New City–Suoi Tien Urban Railway

The proposed Binh Duong New City–Suoi Tien Urban Railway Line 1 will connect with the existing Ho Chi Minh City Metro Line 1 at Suoi Tien.

The planned line is approximately 31.6 kilometres long, primarily elevated, with around 19 stations and a depot. Estimated investment is approximately US$2.1 billion.

As of early August 2026, geological drilling and other preparatory procedures were underway. Construction is publicly targeted to begin by the end of 2026, with completion planned for 2030.

At this stage, reports that the project has been “launched” refer mainly to geological investigation and pre-construction activities—not full main-line construction.

Ben Thanh–Can Gio High-Speed Urban Railway

The proposed line will connect central Ho Chi Minh City with the Can Gio coastal area.

It will be approximately 54 kilometres long, with a proposed maximum speed of 350 km/h. The estimated project investment is VND102.43 trillion, excluding approximately VND12.78 trillion in land acquisition costs.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held in December 2025. However, subsequent progress remains dependent on compensation, resettlement, regulatory procedures and site handover.

2. Airport Infrastructure

Long Thanh International Airport

Phase 1 of Long Thanh International Airport is one of Vietnam’s most closely watched aviation infrastructure projects.

With an investment exceeding US$5.4 billion, Phase 1 is designed to handle 25 million passengers and 1.2 million tonnes of cargo annually.

Airfield works, terminal construction, cargo facilities, airport roads, air traffic systems and supporting infrastructure are being completed in parallel. Trial operations are planned between September and November 2026, with commercial operation targeted for December 2026.

Before opening, the airport must complete system integration, calibration, inspection, operating certification and trial procedures.

The project involves terminal construction, airfield engineering, baggage handling, airport logistics, air traffic control, MEP systems, digital operations and ground transport connections.

Gia Binh International Airport

Gia Binh International Airport is planned in Bac Ninh Province, approximately 40 kilometres from central Hanoi.

The project has an estimated investment of approximately US$7.5 billion and a planned area of around 1,960 hectares. Its target capacity before 2030 is 30 million passengers and 1.6 million tonnes of cargo annually.

The investment policy has been approved, while land acquisition and multiple on-site works are progressing. Selected facilities are planned to support APEC 2027, while the remaining Phase 1 works will continue toward 2030.

The availability of initial operational facilities for APEC 2027 should be distinguished from completion of the full first phase.

Da Nang International Airport Terminal 1 Expansion

The adjusted investment policy for the expansion of Terminal 1 at Da Nang International Airport was approved in late July 2026.

The project has a total investment of nearly VND11.3 trillion, approximately US$430 million. Its scope includes the expansion and renovation of Terminal 1, an elevated access road, a multistorey car park, technical and mechanical areas, wastewater treatment facilities and internal transport infrastructure.

Construction is planned to begin in August 2027. The expanded terminal is scheduled to enter operation in January 2029, while renovation of the existing terminal is expected to be completed in August 2029.

Its current status is therefore more accurately described as investment approval and construction planning, rather than main construction.

3. Coastal Links and Expressways

Can Gio–Vung Tau Coastal Link

Construction of the Can Gio–Vung Tau coastal transport link began on 1 July 2026.

The route is more than 14 kilometres long and is planned as a six-lane connection combining an undersea tunnel with long-span marine bridges.

The project includes nearly 3.9 kilometres of undersea tunnel, of which approximately 3 kilometres will use immersed-tube technology, together with more than 8 kilometres of sea-crossing bridges.

Total investment is estimated at approximately US$3.6 billion, with an expected construction period of around three years.

Key engineering areas include immersed-tube fabrication and installation, dredging, marine foundations, ground treatment, waterproofing, bridge construction, ventilation, fire protection, operational control and geotechnical monitoring.

Quy Nhon–Pleiku Expressway

The Quy Nhon–Pleiku Expressway will connect Quy Nhon Port with Pleiku and Vietnam’s Central Highlands.

The approximately 125-kilometre route is planned as a complete four-lane expressway, with an estimated investment of US$1.7 billion.

Project components 1 and 3 began construction in December 2025, while component 2 is scheduled to advance during 2026. Overall implementation is planned for 2025–2029.

The route includes mountainous terrain, bridges, tunnels, slopes, deep cuttings, high embankments and geological hazard-control works.

Ho Chi Minh City–Moc Bai Expressway

The Ho Chi Minh City–Moc Bai Expressway will connect Ho Chi Minh City’s Ring Road 3 with the Moc Bai border gate and the wider Trans-Asian transport corridor.

The project is approximately 51 kilometres long, planned as a four-lane expressway, with an estimated investment of US$750 million.

Mine clearance, utility relocation and other early works have started. Construction packages are expected to be implemented in stages, with operation targeted for the end of 2027.

4. Ports and Marine Infrastructure

Can Gio International Container Transshipment Port

The Can Gio International Container Transshipment Port is planned on an area of approximately 571 hectares.

The project has an estimated investment close to US$5 billion and a long-term handling capacity of approximately 16.9 million TEU per year. The planned port will include around 13 berths and approximately 7.5 kilometres of main quay, with the ability to accommodate container vessels of up to 250,000 DWT.

An investment consortium was approved in April 2026. However, the project remains in the land, marine-area allocation, design, financing and construction-preparation stage.

It should not yet be described as being under full construction.

Cai Mep Ha Port Phase 1

Phase 1 of the Cai Mep Ha general and container port project began construction on 1 July 2026.

The project covers more than 351 hectares, with approximately 7.5 kilometres of quay infrastructure. It has an estimated investment of around US$2 billion and a planned capacity of approximately 10.8 million TEU per year.

The port is designed to accommodate container vessels of up to 250,000 DWT. The first allocation of approximately 102 hectares of land and marine area was completed shortly after construction began, with operations publicly targeted for the end of 2028.

Its construction scope includes reclamation, ground improvement, quay structures, revetments, yards, dredging, cargo-handling equipment and port automation systems.

5. Energy Infrastructure

Block B–O Mon Gas-to-Power Chain

The Block B–O Mon development is an integrated energy project covering offshore gas fields, approximately 431 kilometres of pipelines and four gas-fired power plants with a combined capacity of around 3,800 MW.

Total investment across the gas-to-power chain is close to US$12 billion.

Offshore platform components, subsea and onshore pipelines, and power-plant packages are progressing through multiple implementation stages.

The project is relevant to offshore engineering, pipeline construction, subsea systems, marine logistics, corrosion protection, power-generation equipment, monitoring and project management.

Bac Ai Pumped-Storage Hydropower Plant

Bac Ai is Vietnam’s first large-scale pumped-storage hydropower project.

The plant has an installed capacity of 1,200 MW and an investment of approximately US$810 million. Its major structures include upper and lower reservoirs, an underground powerhouse, water-conveyance tunnels, shafts and supporting electrical facilities.

Main civil and underground works are currently under construction. The first generating unit is planned to enter operation by the end of 2029, with overall completion expected in 2030.

The project involves underground excavation, tunnel support, hydraulic structures, rock engineering, monitoring, power equipment and complex construction management.

Engineering Supply Chain Areas to Watch

The publicly announced scope of these projects indicates several areas in which international project demand may intersect with China’s civil engineering supply chain.

Railway and Urban Transit

Relevant capabilities include:

  • Feasibility studies and front-end engineering design
  • Railway, station and depot design
  • Track systems and electrification
  • Communications, signalling and operational control
  • Rolling stock and specialised maintenance equipment
  • Testing, commissioning and asset management

Underground and Tunnel Engineering

Potential areas of relevance include:

  • Urban rail tunnels and underground stations
  • Immersed-tube tunnels and marine approaches
  • Underground powerhouses and water-conveyance tunnels
  • Tunnel boring, excavation and support equipment
  • Waterproofing, segment systems and specialist materials
  • Fire protection, ventilation and operational monitoring

Geotechnical and Foundation Engineering

Common requirements across the projects include:

  • Geological investigation and geotechnical consulting

Bridges, Ports and Marine Works
